Information About Double Glazing

The term “double glazing” is really a catch-all term for all energy-efficient windows. There are, in fact, many double glazing manufacturers, producing different types of double glazing. Primary glazing is a term that refers to the original window in a property – usually an older property- which has a single pane of glass. Some houses are under conservation restrictions, which mean that these windows can’t be removed and replaced for double glazed windows. However, secondary glazing can be used, to increase a window’s quality and energy efficiency, without changing a home’s original features. Secondary glazing is a form of double glazing that is perfect for homes with feature windows – bringing the many benefits of double glazing, without impacting on the property’s heritage.

  • Triple glazing adds a third layer of glass to create two insulating pockets of air between the panes. This adds even more protection from sound and the elements. This is more prevalent in cities, where there is heavy traffic pollution, or countries which experience more extreme weather. Triple Glazing is, inevitably, more expensive than double glazing, and is not generally needed in your average, suburban house in the UK.
  • Standard double glazing is the replacement of existing windows and doors to offer additional insulation and energy efficiency. There are a range of styles, materials and colours available, so home owners have the opportunity to choose double glazed front doors and windows that meet their needs on function as well as aesthetics.
