How did you first get into your trade?
Gary started working in a tool hire shop once leaving school and started as a roofing labourer in 1985 (aged 26), he then ventured off on his own in 1999 under the name G J Smith Roofing with one other installer working alongside him. We are now a business with ten installers (working in five teams of 2, specialising in their strengths) and seven office staff including myself - Natalie (Office Manager), Liam (Project Manager), Alex (Estimating Department), Margot (Accounts), Victoria (Administrator), and Paul (Yard Man), not forgetting the boss man himself Gary – Gary underwent a double knee replacement in March and is trying to take a step back now so he is not in the office much anymore. He is enjoying having more free time to himself and taking life easier!
Can you tell us about a job you’re especially proud of?
We have undertaken some lovely jobs, I know Gary loves an ExtraLite roof which we undertook to a mobile home.
Also, undertaking some lovely roof replacements. In 1999 Gary installed a new slate roof to a school in Luton which was opened by Gordon Brown who was Home Secretary at the time.
How has being on TrustATrader helped your business grow?
Being members of Trust A Trader has been a massive benefit for us – obviously being members for 17 years, we have had numerous awarded works via Trust A Trader. We currently have 564 reviews which has helped our business grow.
A quick story on how Gary became a member of Trust A Trader – Gary McEwen approached Gary himself while he was working on a roof and explained about a new business he was working on – ‘Trust A Trader’. I believe Gary McEwen lived in Stevenage and Gary was working on a roof nearby. Gary McEwen was driving a taxi at the time (which I believed was his job) and he promised Gary that he would keep the cost the same for him each year, and he has stuck to his word. Our membership fee has never risen! He said he signed up due to Gary McEwen’s character; he could see he was genuine and seemed like a really nice man.
What should homeowners look out for when choosing a trader?
I believe homeowners should go by recommendation, therefore, looking for companies via Trust A Trader would be most beneficial.
