Fixing shelves to stud walls – when a handyman can help

In most cases, yes — a competent handyman can fix shelving to a stud wall, as long as the shelves aren’t carrying very heavy loads. Stud walls (also called partition walls) are common in modern homes and are made from timber or metal studs covered with plasterboard. While they do need a bit more care than solid brick walls, shelving can be fixed securely using the right approach.

How shelving is fixed to a stud wall

The key is understanding what the shelves will hold and where the studs are located.

Locating the studs

A handyman will normally use a stud finder or gently tap along the wall to locate the vertical studs behind the plasterboard. These are usually spaced at 400 mm or 600 mm intervals. Fixing shelving brackets directly into these studs provides the strongest support.

Fixing lighter shelves

For light-duty shelving (such as decorative shelves, small book shelves or ornaments), a handyman can use heavy-duty plasterboard fixings. These expand behind the plasterboard to spread the weight and are suitable when studs don’t line up exactly with the brackets.

Fixing heavier shelves

For heavier loads, such as full book shelves or storage units, shelves should be screwed directly into the studs using suitable wood screws (typically 50 mm or longer). Pilot holes are usually drilled first to avoid splitting the timber.

If the stud positions don’t match where the shelving needs to go, a handyman may fit a horizontal timber batten secured across multiple studs, then fix the shelving to that for added strength.

When a handyman might not be the right choice

If you’re planning to install very heavy shelving, such as kitchen cabinets or large wall-mounted units, or if you’re unsure whether the wall is timber or metal stud, it’s best to use a qualified carpenter or joiner. They can assess the structure properly and ensure the fixings are safe and long-lasting.

Finding the right trade

For most household shelving jobs on stud walls, a local handyman is usually the right and most cost-effective choice. For larger or load-bearing installations, find an experienced TrustATrader carpenter or joiner who can advise on the best solution.
