About Shaw Preservations Ltd - Damp Proofing in Tadworth (KT20 7JE)
Thank you for viewing our profile.
Here is a snapshot of our Company.
Founded in 1974
We only use qualified surveyors
Members of the Property Care Association – Our regulatory body.
Members of Trustmark - The Governments accredited consumer website
We have our own work force (we do use sub contractors during periods of staff sickness or during a heavy workload)
Our operatives and surveyors are CRB checked (police checked)
Our office staff are highly trained and some have been on the same courses as some non-qualified so called surveyors.
How to choose a reputable contractor? Where to start?
First port of call is here. So you are already off to a great start. Next let’s look at the feedback. Good feedback is essential for any customers on this site. Was the company was on time, efficient, polite? Does the work look good? Great, this is what we all want from our contractors.
Now lets dig a bit deeper? Is the surveyor qualified? Of course, you wouldn’t want your home being inspected by a Non-qualified surveyor would you? Did you know there are a large amount of unqualified “surveyors” carrying out inspections? Some are very good, but equally some are poor. As a customer, how can you tell the difference? Which is why we would ALWAYS recommend using a contractor registered with the Property Care Association This is the Damp/Dry Rot traders regulatory body.
Being a member of the PCA means technical competence is checked. Any person can inject a DPC into the wall, but are they injecting the recommended quantities and at the right height? As a consumer how do you know? Is the plaster the correct formulation? (there is a special plaster with a DPC) how do you know this has been carried out correctly? Yes it looks nice, yes, it is dry now, but will it stand the test of time.
Time and time again, we have customers that have had damp works carried out by a lovely fella who was polite and helpful; wall is dry and he was definitely not a Rogue by any means. However, 18 months – 3 years down the line the damp is re-appearing. The contractor that issued the guarantee hasn’t gone bust – he has changed his name meaning the piece of paper you have is worthless!!
A useful tip: Try checking out the company on Companies House. This is a FREE service https://www.gov.uk/get-information-about-a-company here you will find a list of companies registered in the UK. . Here you will be able to tell how long a company has been trading. So you can see if they are telling you Porky Pies
There are so many different types of Wood Rot but the most damaging – Dry Rot Fungus – is often misdiagnosed by the unprofessional eye. As a PCA member, extensive on site learning, classroom training and laboratory training courses have been undertaken before sitting the exam so that Plaster Fungus is not diagnosed as Dry Rot and expensive treatments are then carried out (see our photo page to see how similar these rots are)
Similarly, Wood Boring Beetles come in various guises, from Common Furniture Beetle (attacks wood) to the Bark Borer (doesn't damage wood) again, often misdiagnosed, again with costly results.
Is the dampness due to condensation? This is the biggest cause of dampness in a property; or is it Penetrating dampness? Again, mis-diagnosing the problem can lead to incorrect treatment.
Whether you want an informal chat, need advice or book an inspection, we await your call.

"I have known that Shaw Preservations have been carrying out quality damp proofing and timber treatment for decades, but now they are providing top quality solutions for condensation problems. I popped in to their shop today and picked up a number of units off the shelf; where as I usually have to get them delivered. Most of the fans & PIV units are on display. I will definitely be back."
