What Is CORGI?

Gas safety is paramount around the world and in the United Kingdom it is watched over by CORGI (Council for Registered Gas Installers).  This organization is known as the ‘national watchdog for gas safety’ in the country and they license hundreds of CORGI registered heating engineers every year.  CORGI registered heating engineers are tradesmen that have qualified through the organization and proven to be the best in the business and highly trained and competent trades people.

CORGI was founded in 1970 with the intent of keeping the general public of the United Kingdom safe from the hazards gas heating presented.  Two years earlier the 22-story Ronan Point apartment building in London was destroyed by a blast from a gas main, killing five people and leaving the entire block in a shambles.  CORGI was formed after this tragic accident in an effort to monitor gas installations and to make sure the work was done correctly and within the regulations set out by the government.

CORGI registered heating engineers did not become a reality until 1991.  Prior to this year, heating engineers had the choice to join CORGI on a voluntary basis, but the Health & Safety Executive in the United Kingdom requested a mandatory registration of all heating engineers.  The organization has grown and now includes being responsible for all CORGI registered heating engineers in Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, and the Island of Guernsey.  They are currently working on getting the other Channel Isles to join the organization in order to improve gas safety.

Currently there are 55,000 CORGI registered heating engineering businesses employing around 110,000 gas fitting operatives.  Registration is a legal requirement for any business or self-employed heating engineer that works on gas appliances, fittings, and other gas related items.  CORGI is considered the leading authority for gas safety information on both a private and professional level.  In addition to gas safety, CORGI also supports other trades, like plumbing and electrical work.

A listing of all CORGI registered heating engineers is available to consumers on the CORGI site.  They keep an up to date register so that everyone can easily find an engineer in their area that guarantees that the work performed meets all of the governmental standards.  Over the last 38 years, a CORGI badge on a business has come to represent high-quality work that is safe.  The standards set by CORGI have become the standard for many other tradesmen services.

CORGI asks that their customers report any gas work that is performed by someone other than a CORGI registered heating engineer.  All it takes is for one illegal gas worker to make a mistake and cause more deaths.  CORGI will investigate any reported illegal activity and end out a CORGI registered heating engineer to correct any problems they find.  By hiring a CORGI registered heating engineer to do your gas work, you know that you are getting the best in the business and that the work that is finished is covered, up to code and proven safe.
