Job responsibilities of professional roofers

Roofers have one of the toughest jobs in all of the trades. Working on a roof is no picnic, but is especially difficult in hot or cold weather. Job responsibilities of professional roofers include knowing how to lay all types of roof shingles, including clay tile shingles.

Roofing tools

Just like all other tradesmen, roofers must have the applicable set of tools. They carry ladders to get up onto the roof where they will work to either patch a hole or repair the roof. While some people just get a roof re-shingled, this will only work for a certain period of time. After about 40 years, you often need a new roof. A new roof entails removing all of the layers of shingles in the original roof as well as the tar paper and, in most cases, the wood underlay. The wood must then be replaced, new tar paper put down and brand new shingles put on the roof. This is when you need roofers.

A good roofer learns his trade as an apprentice. During this stage, he will participate in removing old roofs from homes as well as laying new roofs in existing or brand new homes. He will have the proper tools, such as hammer and nails or, preferably, a nail gun, to affix the tar paper.

New home roofing

If the roofer is working on a new house, the wood will already be on the roof and it is not necessary for him to add wood. He needs to know how to work with tar paper, the different grades of tar paper and what type should be used on the residence or building he is roofing.

Skills needed

Roofers should have basic carpentry skills and knowledge of what types of roofs work best in certain areas. Those places where it is very hot, such as Florida, often have tile or clay roofs. These are much more difficult to lay than regular roofing shingles that can be nailed in place. A good roofer will gain experience in laying all types of shingles and know how to make sure that they look good as well as work to shield the roof.

Carpentry skills and the correct tools are only two the of the “must haves” for roofers. Roofers should be comfortable working in high places and have the ability to lift about 60 pounds. They should have plenty of warm, layered clothing for the winter months, if they work in areas where it is cold.

Roofing jobs

Roofers can make good money if they belong to a union. Anyone who is interested in being a roofer, should inquire as to how to get apprenticed at the local union hall.  This can be a good opportunity for anyone with basic carpentry skills to make decent wages. The amount of money that you can make being a roofer depends on the state in which you work. Roofers in Florida do not make as much money as those in Chicago.

A career in the trades is not for everyone. However, anyone who is good with their hands and does not mind working in high places can earn a good living as one of the many roofers in this industry. It pays to hire good quality roofers for your job.
