Plasterers get your job done

Plasterers are tradesmen who first mix and then spread plaster on surfaces like interior walls, ceilings, and floors to create a smooth and even surface which is ready for decoration. Plasterers can also be involved in outdoor work on exterior walls coating them with pebble-dash, sand, cement, and other stone effect materials. Some plasterers work on big commercial developments while some work on small scale jobs and repairs.

A plasterer usually works in a team and deals with one of the three most common types of plastering. First is solid plastering, where the plasterer applies wet finishes to surfaces and puts protective coverings like pebble dash on outdoor walls. In fibrous plastering, the plasterer is responsible for creating ornamental plasterwork like columns, architraves, cornices, and ceiling roses. This he creates by using a mix of plaster and short fibers. The last type of plastering is dry lining which involves fixing of internal wallboard partitions or plasterboard on a metal frame or timber to get them ready for decorating. A solid plasterer or a plasterer involved in dry lining usually works indoor while a fibrous plasterer usually works inside a workshop. Both sort of plastering jobs usually need the plasterer to work at heights and platforms as per the job.

Being a plasterer requires very good practical skills and ability to work with tools. This is the foremost requirement. A good plasterer should also be able to work quickly, be a team player, and be efficient. If the plasterer has good numerical skills which help in calculating surface areas or volumes quickly and accurately, is also considered a big plus. For fibrous plastering, the plasterer needs to have good creative abilities too. And last but not the least, all plasterers need to have a good fitness level as plastering is a highly physical task and requires a lot of stamina and strength.

There are a lot of different types of plasters in use. One type is the backing or the bonding type of plasters which are mainly used in solid plastering as the base on the wall. Next is the finishing plaster which forms the final coat of plaster on the wall making it ready for decorative work. These days’ companies have come out with one coat plasters which perform the function of both types of plasters.

Plastering requires a lot of time and patience, and if you plan to take upon the task of plastering your house walls and floors yourselves then be prepared for a lot of hard work. Plastering can also be quite messy. It needs to be carried out properly if you want an even finish on your walls, otherwise an uneven finish can look quite unattractive and can spoil the look of the whole room. If you are not too confident about doing the job yourself then it would be best to get a professional plasterer to do it for you. Check for references and rates before you choose a plasterer and then let the plasterer do his job. A good plastering job can make a whole lot of difference to your room walls.
