There are a lot of different types of builders. Builders can build homes, roads, bridges, office buildings, furniture, theater sets, websites; the list of different types of builders can go on for pages. The first step to becoming a professional builder is to decide what kind of builder you want to be. What are you passionate about? Do you want to build things that are large, or things that are more manageable?
Builders need to have a variety of skills, but the most important is an understanding of basic carpentry. It does not matter if you want to build birdhouses or skyscrapers; knowledge of carpentry is required. Builders also have engineering skills in that they know how things are put together. In fact—Engineers, though the title is fancier, are builders at heart. Builders know how different building materials fit together, and how well the different materials will work together. It is the builder who will tell you whether or not your home’s framework should be wood or steel and they will be able to tell you why.
Builders also have a hand in the designing of their projects. They work with the architects, the contractors, the electricians, the plumbers - everybody who puts together that structure, the builders help them make their decisions. In many ways, builders are jacks of all trades because they have the knowledge of all of the inner workings of a building or structure. A builder of homes, for example, will know how to construct a home so that the pipes and wiring can be interspersed among the frame later, before the walls are put in.
Every day builders use carpentry, engineering, math and physics. On some days they use chemistry and drawing. Builders make and interpret the designs for the structures they build and know how to fix things. It can take time to learn these skills, but if you are someone who likes to figure out how things work or how they are put together, or if you are a person who likes to put things together, then being a builder could be the perfect job for you.
Becoming a builder is something that anybody can do. It takes some time, some patience and a lot of hard work. Building is not a glamorous job by any means. It is also not usually a glorified job, but it can be a very rewarding job. People who are professional builders are passionate about their jobs. They didn’t get into building because they wanted to get rich, they got into it because they love putting things together that other people can use.

With the proper training and instruction you can become any kind of builder. Builders are passionate people who love what they do. Anybody can become a builder if they keep at it.
