AFC Portchester

Trustatrader.com is not only a directory containing experienced quality tradesmen but a company commited to helping the community, this is why we have started carrying out community projects.

Community football club AFC Portchester won a competition run by Trust A Trader to have a team of builders come in and carry out a project over the bank holiday weekend. There was a fantastic local turn out which was highlighted by the arrival of Portsmouth FC star Lomana Lualua to perform the official opening and sign autographs

The changing rooms have been boarded up for the past 18 months, and the 400-member club, the biggest in Hampshire, had hoped to renovate them as part of its £1m stadium dream at Wicor Recreation Park, off Cranleigh Road in Portchester.

Gary Mcewen, managing director of Trust A Trader, was inspired to find a community project to get involved in after going to see Pompey play at Fratton. He was there at Wicor, mucking in with the work, and said: 'As a company we always wanted to put something back in to the community.'

As well as local traders First Impressions, Mr Fix It and Covers giving time and materials for free, the club ran a barbecue, car wash, bouncy castle, face painting, and mini-football tournament to help bring in the cash. Some of the club members also joined in the renovation work.

Some responses from the people involved with the project;

Fareham Council

Fareham Borough Council has worked in partner ship with one of its local clubs, AFC Portchester for a number of years.

The Club has many teams from u9s to adults with the adult team playing in the Wessex League. It was the first Hampshire Club to achieve a Community Charter Standard award.

The council has offered the club a lease on a sports pavilion and a football pitch as a home ground. The pavilion was urgently in need of renovation.

The club recently won a competition organised by Trustatrader a sponsor of the Portsmouth FC and AFC Portchester were rewarded with an offer to renovate the pavilion internally and externally.

Trustatrader approached the Council to do this.

It was agreed and the work was undertaken by a number of craftsmen supported by Club members over the three days of the first May bank holiday.

The work completed was of a high standard leaving the pavilion expertly refurbished to the delight of the football club.

Hi Gary & Russel, I have just about come back to reality, after the last hectic weekend ,not only did Pompey stay up but you have kick started our Community club project at a time when it was most needed.

I would like to thank you both on behalf of every volunteer, player, coach, parent and future member of our club for the hard work before during and even after the much needed makeover of our changing rooms. Not only did you provide top quality tradesmen, you used top of the range materials, even to the point of having the paintwork specially mixed to match our club colours.

A specail mention must go to the Tradesman that you provided who worked so hard in the short time allocated, First Impressions for their tiling and paintwork, Vickers & Sons for there specialist Carpentary, and Mr Fixit himself Ian, who not only took the bull by the horns, he provided a great sence of leadership in the project and never failed to deliver.

Thank you once again.

Paul Kelly
